NEW DELHI: The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) on Tuesday approved eight new projects worth around Rs 638 crore under its ongoing river rejuvenation programme which includes four projects worth Rs 407 crore to clean River Hindon – a tributary of River Yamuna – in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh and one project for development of seven ghats in Prayagraj in the state as part of preparations for the ‘Mahakumbh’ in the city in 2025.
The sanctioned projects of Shamli have been planned to prevent the flow of polluted water into Krishni River. Krishni is one of the major tributaries of Hindon which discharges pollution from Shamli district into River Hindon which is identified as Priority I (highly) polluted river stretch.
“It is great news for this region and a sense of fulfilment for me. I, as a member of UP Planning Commission during the then Akhilesh Yadav-led government, studied the pollution of Hindon, Krishni and Kali rivers, and submitted a report on remedial measures in 2016,” said Sudhir Panwar, Lucknow University professor.
The four projects in Shamli district include construction of 5 Million Litres per Day (MLD) Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), 5 KLD Septage Co-treatment Facility, Interception & Diversion (I&D) and other works in Babri and Bantikhera villages; MLD STP, 5 KLD Septage Co-treatment Facility, I&D and other works in Banat town; 40 MLD STP, 20 KLD Septage Co-treatment Facility, I&D and other works in Shamli town; and 10 MLD STP, 10 KLD Septage Co-treatment Facility, I&D and other works in Thanabhawan town.
The ghats which are to be developed as part of preparations for the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj include Dashashmedh Ghat, Quila Ghat, Naukayan Ghat, Gyan Ganga Ashram Ghat, Saraswati Ghat, Maheva Ghat and Rasulabad Ghat. “These ghats will have amenities such as areas for bathing, change rooms, universal access ramps, drinking water points, flood lights for night, kiosks, landscaping etc.,” said a statement from the ministry of Jal Shakti (water resources).
The remaining three projects, sanctioned by the executive committee (EC) of the NMCG in its 48th meeting, include two sewerage management projects – one each in Bihar and Madhya Pradesh – and another project for ghat development for Haridwar, Uttarakhand where ‘Akhand Param Dham’ ghat will be constructed.
G Asok Kumar, director general, NMCG during the EC meeting urged the officials from the States to do solar farming on the sewage treatment plant (STP) sites and promote the use of solar power to run those plants.
He also asked officials to use grills to separate and dispose of solid waste from the drains that are flowing into the rivers. Pointing out that it is the responsibility of the state governments to maintain the assets created under ‘Namami Gange’ (Ganga REjuvenation) programme, Kumar said that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) being adopted by the urban local bodies (ULBs) for cleaning of existing ghats should be communicated to NMCG.
