SRINAGAR: J&K police registered Wednesday an FIR against a “non-local” student of National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Srinagar, following protests the day before on the campus triggered by allegations that the accused had made blasphemous remarks against a particular religion.
A YouTube video purportedly containing the alleged offensive remarks led to demonstrations on the campus. The student from outside J&K was rusticated by the NIT authorities and allowed to go home on Tuesday itself. It wasn’t clear if the accused would be arrested.
Police intervened to address the unrest and pacify the protesting students. Police tweeted Wednesday that an FIR has been registered against the accused. “Common public is appealed to desist from spreading rumours/false information. They shouldn’t fall prey to false propaganda of anti-social elements. Legal action shall be taken against those who are found to be involved in provocative acts/instigation,” police warned on social media.
Kashmir zone IG VK Birdi had said the video wasn’t posted by the accused, but by some vlogger on YouTube.
Similar unrest had engulfed NIT-Srinagar in the past, notably in 2016 when clashes erupted between two groups over a cricket match when students from outside J&K objected to the celebrations of some local students following India’s defeat against West Indies.
