Nikki Haley, Tim Scott seek home state’s support to defeat Donald Trump

NEW DELHI: Nikki Haley and Tim Scott, both South Carolina Republicans eyeing the presidency, will seek to leverage their home state’s support to challenge former President Donald Trump for the GOP nomination. Officials from both campaigns told the New York Post that they can overcome Trump’s lead in Palmetto State polling.
Political observers however cautioned that success in South Carolina might not be sufficient to thwart Trump’s nomination.
Scott, 58, appointed to the Senate by then-Governor Haley in 2012, has campaigned extensively in Iowa and New Hampshire. However, the Scott campaign emphasized their determination to win South Carolina, his home state.
According to a Winthrop University survey, Trump leads among registered South Carolina Republicans at 50.5%, followed by Haley (16.6%), and Florida governor Ron DeSantis (12.1%). Scott trails at 5.8%, narrowly ahead of Vivek Ramaswamy (5.1%).
Despite the challenging poll numbers, the Scott campaign relies on name recognition from his successful 2022 Senate re-election and endorsements from over 140 elected officials and 265 grassroots leaders in the state. They emphasize his robust fundraising and ground game, noting his higher name recognition in South Carolina compared to elsewhere.
In response, Scott told the New York Post, “I’m honored with the outpouring of support…across my home state,” expressing his commitment to taking the conservative message nationwide.
Meanwhile, Haley, who has been rising in polls after strong debate performances, leans on her track record as governot, which included tax and unemployment reductions. Her campaign highlights large South Carolina events and asserts strong local support.
Republican strategists stressed that a loss in South Carolina, particularly without wins in early states, could be detrimental to their overall nomination prospects.
