NH widening led to discom’s Rs 650 crore loss: Himachal CM Sukhu

New Delhi: Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has claimed that widening of NH-3 in the state towards the riverside of Beas in the vicinity of Larji power house caused abnormal increase in the water level of the river and damaged the power plant during heavy rains in July. He said this had caused a loss of over Rs 650 crore to the state’s power distribution company.
In a letter addressed to road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari, Sukhu has urged the Centre to “compensate” the state power distribution company, HPSEBL, for poor designing and planning of NH-3 without proper hydrological studies and also ignoring the warnings by the discom’s field officers.
Highlighting the issues, the CM also sought Gadkari’s “personal intervention” to ensure that proper civil structures are designed and reconstructed along the riverside to avoid recurrence of such destruction.
The CM mentioned that NHAI went 4-5 meters inside the river, which resulted in reducing its width and increasing the risk of flood.
