JAMMU: Sufi and heritage sites are among dozens of new destinations being developed in Jammu and Kashmir to boost tourism and open up new economic avenues for the people, lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha said while inaugurating Jammu division’s first tulip garden at Sanasar in Ramban district on Saturday.
Congratulating the tourists and local residents on the occasion, the LG said the garden, spread over 40 kanals of land amid lush green woods, with 2.75 lakh tulip bulbs of 25 varieties, would provide a major impetus to tourism and trade.
Observing that the tourism potential of Jammu was unique in many ways, Sinha said the region, with its breathtaking natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, magnificent cuisine and warm hospitality, could create a niche for itself on the global tourism map and the administration was committed to ensuring the necessary infrastructure and resources for that purpose.
“As a ‘tourism mission’ initiative, 75 new destinations, 75 sufi/religious sites, 75 new cultural, heritage sites and 75 new tracks are being developed in J&K to open up new economic avenues for fulfilling the aspirations of the people,” the LG said.
Development of water parks in the twin cities of Jammu and Srinagar, and establishment of cultural centres at Ramban, Udhampur, Kathua, Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch would help in building local capacities, boost employment and create a favourable climate for entrepreneurship, he added.
Sinha underscored that PM Narendra Modi’s “mantra of development as well as heritage” was guiding the administration in the journey to “build a modern, prosperous J&K”. “Today, J&K has become the most preferred tourist destination. Caravan tourism as well as development of unexplored destinations will give a new momentum to tourism growth in the UT,” the LG said, adding that Rs 447 crore had been allocated to the sector this year to develop J&K as a modern and smart tourist destination.
Samba Fort, Hari Parbat and General Zorawar Singh Palace would also be renovated to revive the ageless cultural legacy, he added.
