KATHMANDU: A special court in Nepal will pronounce the sentence on December 14 against two persons, including a suspected ISI agent, who were convicted for plotting a failed terror attack targeting a train in India some seven years ago. “The court Special Court will decide the exact jail sentence for Samsul Hoda and Brij Kishor Giri, who were convicted for planting a bomb in a train in India seven years ago,” said a spokesperson at the Special Court Dhan Bahadur Karki.
Nepal’s Department of Money Laundering Investigation (DMLI) filed a case in the Special Court some five years ago demanding a minimum of 3 years to a maximum 20 years jail sentence against the two convicts in the failed plot to carry out a blast in the train in India in 2016.
“They were first charged for the murder of two Indian nationals and then later accused of money laundering crime by the DMLI. After going through the investigation into the murder case, it was later revealed that they were linked to planting a bomb in train in Bihar some seven years ago,” Karki said.
The Special Court on Tuesday convicted the main accused Hoda and his accomplice Giri in the murder case and money laundering.
“During the investigation, it was revealed that they had remitted money from Abu Dhabi to Nepal and used the money for planting a bomb in the train in Bihar,” according to the verdict issued by the Special Court on Tuesday.
The court, however, gave a clean chit to five other accused persons in the case.
“As no proof could be produced against the five accused in the railway blast case, they were given a clean chit,” says the verdict.
Besides the jail sentence, the Special Court will also decide on a fine against the two convicts. The fine is equivalent to five times the money they had transferred to conduct the terrorist activities, says the court verdict. However, the exact amount of fine and jail sentence will be pronounced on the December 14 hearing.
Hoda, the mastermind of the plot, is said to have links with Pakistani nationals and was mobilising people from Nepal and India to execute his terror plan from Dubai. The bomb was planted but did not explode due to a technical fault.
Hoda, according to the reports, used to receive money from Pakistan’s spy agency ISI and send it to Nepal from Dubai to carry out his plans. He murdered two Indian nationals after his plan failed.
