NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police on Wednesday informed the Supreme Court that it was ready to register an FIR, based on the sexual harassment complaint filed by seven national-level women wrestlers, against Wrestling Federation of India president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
A day after the court sought police’s response on a petition filed by three wrestlers alleging protection from prosecution given to Singh, solicitor general Tushar Mehta told a bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha that Delhi Police assessed that there is a need for a preliminary inquiry into certain issues prior to registration of FIR.

“However, if the Supreme Court is of the view that an FIR needs to be registered immediately, Delhi Police can do it,” the SG said.
The bench said in similar matters, it generally seeks views of the respondents before entertaining the petitions. “But this case was different as it involved complaints by nationallevel wrestlers. Delhi Police can file a reply affidavit detailing its views on the registration of FIR on Friday,” it said.
