The senior Thackeray tried to paper over the Uddhav-Raj differences in circa 2005. His plan was to evenly distribute Maharashtra’s 36 districts between the two warring cousins. However, the formula couldn’t reach the negotiating table because of lack of trust, said sources. Raj quit the Sena and floated his own outfit, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena in March 2006.
