NCDRC: Ncdrc Junks Govt Plea Against Nestle On Maggi Noodles | India Business News

MUMBAI: The National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission has ruled in favour of Nestle India and dismissed central govt’s plea against the company through which it alleged that the firm indulged in unfair trade practices by selling Maggi Noodles in the past.
The Department of Consumer Affairs had sought compensation of Rs 284.5 crore and punitive damages worth Rs 355.4 crore from the company.The NCDRC passed an order in favour of Nestle on April 2, the company said in a stock exchange filing on Thursday.
“Complaint filed by the Union of India, Department of Consumer Affairs in 2015 before the NCDRC on the allegation that by selling Maggi Noodles in the past, the company had indulged in unfair trade practice by manufacturing and selling of hazardous and defective goods to the public and thereby seeking compensation… was dismissed by NCDRC in favour of the company vide NCDRC’s order dated April 2, 2024. Copy of said order was received by the company on April 3, 2024,” Nestle said.
In 2015, Nestle’s instant noodles Maggi was banned in India for five months on allegations of higher-than-permissible lead content and flavour enhancer monosodium glutamate (MSG). Nestle had destroyed around 38,000 tonnes of the noodles following the move. Govt’s action against Nestle India was the first instance of the Department of Consumer Affairs moving NCDRC.
