NEW DELHI: Union junior minister for law and justice S P Singh Baghel doubled down on his remark describing Muslims as intolerant by citing the statement of former Vice President Hamid Ansari in which the latter had said that members of the community were feeling insecure.
“Country is witness to the statement made by a person who retired from high constitutional office saying Muslims are insecure in India,” Baghel told TOI on Tuesday, defending his statement that those who may appear to be tolerant pretend to be so in order to grab the constitutional offices of the vice president and governor as well as positions of vice-chancellors. “The moment these so-called intellectuals retire, their actual face is exposed when they start giving (communal) statements,” the minister had said on Monday while speaking at an event.
“What wrong did I say? PM Narendra Modi has ensured that no one in this country is discriminated against. ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas! Muslims are as much beneficiary as others, be it the PM Aawas Yojana or the free foodgrains scheme,” he said.
Quality modern education can bring the desired change among minorities and make them progressive like APJ Abdul Kalam, the minister said while speaking at length on history of conversions in India, intolerance among Muslims and need for a change in the madrassa system of education. “Only good quality education can one day solve the problem. If they study in madrassa, they will become Paish Imam and if they study physics and chemistry, they will become Abdul Kalam,” Baghel said.
