MUMBAI: After suspending an entire class of BCom students for two days as a disciplinary action last week, the premier NMIMS University in Vile Parle has decided to limit internet access only to approved academic sites within the Wi-Fi enabled campus. A student allegedly attempted to play music in class, after connecting it to the smartboard, right in the middle of a faculty member’s powerpoint presentation. The class of 180 students from the university’s Anil Surendra Modi School of Commerce was suspended following the professor’s complaint.
An official from the institute said there were increasing complaints of misconduct against the second-year BCom (Honours) students since the time they returned to physical classrooms after the pandemic.
“There have been instances of students answering back in a disrespectful manner. Some of them just walk out of class on the pretext of using the washroom. They were not focused. It had become incredibly difficult to hold these students in class quietly even for an hour. The professor was eventually frustrated and said she will not teach this particular class. The institute had to take a tough stance to maintain the sanctity of the place,” said the official. The suspension notice was served to students of divisions A, B and C of SYBCom (Honours) for serious misconduct.
The university’s pro-VC, Meena Chintamaneni, told TOI the university has a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of indiscipline.
