GUWAHATI/NEW DELHI: A day after a video of sexual assault on two women in Manipur led to outrage, Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga on Thursday underscored that “silence is not an option” and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Manipur counterpart N Biren Singh to act immediately to restore peace in the troubled state and bring all the perpetrators of the crime to justice.
Zoramthanga, whose Mizo National Front (MNF) is a constituent of NDA, tweeted, “Brutal violence in Manipur not only affects the neighbouring state but the whole country. Situations seem to have worsened! I was really shocked and shaken to see the video.”
In a series of tweets, the Mizoram CM, who has been constantly voicing concern over the ethnic conflict in Manipur, said, “Silence is not an option! I would like to call for immediate restoration of peace and normalcy. It is incumbent and imperative upon the Manipur govt. and the central govt. to look for immediate ways for peace restoration. Therefore, I urge Manipur Chief Minister @NBirenSingh and Hon’ble PM of India Shri @narendramodi Ji to take immediate action and bring perpetrators to justice!”
Zoramthanga said, “Many lives have been lost, bloodshed all over, physical torture and the victims are looking for refuge wherever possible. With no iota of doubt, those victims are my kin and kin, my own blood and should we quieten the situation by just being silent? I don’t think so!”
Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma also called for harshest action against the guilty, saying, “Extremely disturbed by the recent incident in Manipur. Stripping any human of their dignity is the most demeaning and inhuman act.”
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared Prime Minister Modi’s remark that “no guilty will be spared and law will act with its full might and firmness”, saying he had conveyed the sentiments of the entire nation over the tragic episode.
