NEW DELHI: The National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) and dedicated cybercrime helpline number ‘1930’ had together prevented Rs 765 crore of defrauded money from reaching the hands of online fraudsters until September 30, 2023, the home ministry shared on Friday coinciding with the national cyber security awareness month.
As the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre or I4C, the national overarching cyber-security framework under the MHA’s purview, celebrates October as the national cyber security awareness month, the ministry said NCRP has been receiving an average 5,000 complaints daily since it was set up in 2019, with the complaints so far totalling around 29 lakh.
I4C is observing the national cyber security awareness month by undertaking a variety of awareness campaigns. It has tied up with the Archaeological Survey of India to raise public awareness about NCRP and ‘1930’ helpline with laser beam displays at Qutub Minar through this week. The laser beam campaign will continue until Sunday, or October 22.
The home ministry on Friday said that it had prioritised creation of cyber-safe India “under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and guidance of Home Minister Amit Shah”. “Modi government is fully committed to create a cyber-safe country as cyber security has become an essential aspect of security related affairs, internationally,” MHA said in a statement.
MHA had launched I4C in 2019 to deal with cybercrime in the country in a coordinated and comprehensive manner. The I4C focuses on tackling issues related to cybercrime for citizens, including improving coordination between various law enforcement agencies and stakeholders.
“Since its roll out, I4C has been tirelessly working towards enhancing the nation’s collective capability to tackle cybercrimes and develop effective coordination among the law enforcement agencies and stakeholders, driving change in India’s overall capability to tackle cybercrime and to improve citizen satisfaction levels. It said citizen-centric NCRP, one of the most significant achievements of I4C, and ‘1930’ helpline, which has enabled the common man to register online financial frauds, were operationalised in pursuit of these goals.
