Meghan: Race row escalates: Meghan and Harry could soon lose Royal titles

[ad_1]

In a bold move, Conservative Member of Parliament Bob Seely has announced plans to introduce a bill in Parliament that aims to strip Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their royal titles. Seely argues that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have damaged the reputation of the monarchy, and the proposed legislation draws inspiration from historical precedents.
Seely’s proposed amendment would utilize existing legislation that was employed during World War Ito strip German aristocrats of their British titles. The decision to present this bill comes in the wake of controversies surrounding the Dutch version of Omid Scobie’s new royal book, “Endgame.” The book allegedly names King Charles III as the royal who commented on Prince Archie’s potential skin tone, causing a stir in the ongoing feud.
The proposed bill, known as the Titles Deprivation 1917 Act Amendment Bill, would allow a parliamentary vote to advise the Privy Council to remove royal titles. Seely argues that if individuals choose not to embrace their royal responsibilities, they should forfeit the associated titles and privileges.
Seely expressed his perspective in The Mail on Sunday, stating, “I’m not a republican and support the monarchy, but after the latest installment of the couple’s feud with the rest of the Royal Family, I believe that Parliament and the Privy Council should consider a nuclear option.”
While most bills introduced by backbench MPs face challenges without government support, Seely’s move raises eyebrows amid the current unpredictability of the U.K. government. With Prime Minister Rishi Sunak facing concerning opinion polls, the government’s recent unpredictable actions, such as a diplomatic spat with Greece over the Elgin Marbles, add uncertainty to the outcome.
The ongoing saga involving the Duke and Duchess of Sussex began with their Oprah Winfrey interview in March 2021, where Meghan discussed concerns about her child’s skin tone. The couple was previously stripped of honorary royal titles and patronages in 2021, but they retained their duke and duchess titles. Seely’s proposed bill seeks to address this lingering controversy and underscore the principle that titles should not be retained if the monarchy is publicly criticized.
