NEW DELHI: Congress leaders from Uttar Pradesh on Monday pitched for an alliance with Samajwadi Party for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, and flagged caste census as the “right agenda” for the state electorate.
At a meeting with Congress brass led by president Mallikarjun Kharge and RahulGandhi, most members of the state delegation said a deal with SP “should be done”.While a few members felt that a tie-up with the BSP would be more beneficial, they also acknowledged that BSP chief Mayawati was unlikely to agree to an alliance with Congress or any other party.
The interesting bit, sources said, was the expectations from the tie-up with SP. While a few felt that Congress was a national party with a history of good performance in the state, and should seek a “respectable” seat share, others were more realistic. A senior Congress leader is learnt to have remarked that the party should be mindful of its strength on the ground and make an objective assessment.
It was also mentioned that minorities are firmly behind Congress this time, and SP needs Congress as much in UP. State president Ajay Rai suggested that Kharge, Rahul and Priyanka should contest from the state.
According to a leader, despite the recent reverses in the assembly elections, Rahul pitched Congress as a serious player, arguing that it is only his party which can eventually defeat BJP.
