MEA summons German diplomat over remarks on Delhi CM’s arrest, calls it ‘blatant interference’ | India News

NEW DELHI: India lodged a protest on Saturday regarding the German envoy‘s comments on the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi liquor policy case. The ministry of external affairs stated that the German envoy’s remarks constituted a ‘clear interference in India’s internal affairs.’

George Enzweiler, the deputy head of mission of German embassy, was summoned by the MEA to officially register the protest. Enzweiler was spotted exiting the MEA office in South Block this morning.

The protest from India follows remarks from the German foreign ministry emphasising the importance of a fair and impartial trial for Kejriwal. The German spokesperson stated, “We take note that India is a democratic nation and expect that principles related to judicial independence and democratic norms will be upheld in this case.” The spokesperson further highlighted Kejriwal’s right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence as fundamental aspects of the rule of law.

Arrested in connection with the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam, Kejriwal is accused by the central agency of being a ‘conspirator.’ Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleges that the now-defunct policy allowed exorbitant profit margins, with retailers benefiting by nearly 185% and wholesalers by 12%. Kejriwal has been remanded in ED custody until March 28 for further interrogation on his involvement in the case.

The investigation into the Delhi liquor policy case has focused on a network of middlemen, businessmen, and politicians referred to as the “South Group” by the central agencies. The ED’s case centers on the unusually high profit margins provided by the Delhi liquor policy for retailers and wholesalers. India’s stance on the matter underscores its commitment to upholding legal processes and ensuring a fair trial for all individuals involved.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is set to ‘gherao’ the Prime Minister’s residence on March 26 in protest of Kejriwal’s arrest by ED, announced party leader Gopal Rai.

Currently, two senior AAP leaders, Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh, are in judicial custody in relation to the excise policy case. Sisodia, the former deputy CM, was taken into custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 26 after extensive questioning. Additionally, on October 5, the ED arrested Sanjay Singh, a Rajya Sabha member.
Kejriwal’s arrest closely followed ED’s detainment of Bharat Rashta Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha, daughter of ex-Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao, on money laundering charges connected to the defunct excise policy. Kavitha remains in ED custody until March 26.
