The Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office reported that actor Matthew Perry died from the “acute effects of ketamine.” However, the autopsy report revealed a complex set of circumstances surrounding his tragic death.

Perry, who had been clean from drugs for 19 months, was undergoing “ketamine infusion therapy” at the time of his passing. This innovative treatment offered hope to many battling addiction. The medical examiner’s report clarified that the ketamine found in his system couldn’t have been from his final infusion due to its short half-life (only three to four hours).

The manner of death was ruled an accident. Perry died October 28 at his home in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles. He was 54.

Despite his personal struggles, Perry’s legacy extends far beyond his battle with addiction. As Chandler Bing in the iconic sitcom Friends, he brought laughter and joy to millions of viewers around the world. The show, which ran from 1994 to 2004, remains one of the most-watched and beloved series in U.S. primetime television history.

While Friends catapulted Perry to stardom, his talents extended far beyond Central Perk. He graced both the big and small screens, leaving his mark on pop culture. From memorable guest appearances in shows like The West Wing and Scrubs to starring roles in movies such as Fools Rush In and The Whole Nine Yards, Perry’s versatility as an actor was undeniable.

Beyond his contributions to entertainment, Perry bravely shared his personal struggles with addiction in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing. “Hi, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name. My friends call me Matty. And I should be dead,” Perry wrote in the opening of the book.
