‘Matter of faith and belief’: Former Gujarat Congress president questions party’s decision to stay away from Ram Temple ceremony | India News

NEW DELHI: The Congress decision to “respectfully decline” invitation to Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Adhir Chowdhury for the Ram Temple inauguration ceremony has not gone down well with some of the party leaders.
Arjun Modhwadia, a senior Congress leader in Gujarat, took to social media platform X to express his disapproval of the party’s decision to skip the event.
“Lord Shri Ram is the deity of worship. This is a matter of faith and belief for the people of the country. The Indian National Congress should have stayed away from making such political decision,” Modhwadia posted on X.
Himachal Pradesh minister Vikramaditya Singh had earlier said he will attend the consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya, making his stand clear even before the party’s top leaders had taken a call on the January 22 event.
The public works department minister, who is the son of former chief minister Virbhadra Singh and state party chief Pratibha Singh, thanked the RSS and the Vishva Hindu Parishad, for the invitation to attend Ram Lalla’s “pran partishtha” ceremony.
“This is not a political issue and I consider myself fortunate to be among the few invitees from Himachal Pradesh and thanked the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) for giving this honour to me and my family,” Singh told the media here.
“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of this historic day and as a Hindu having faith in ‘dev samaj’, it is my responsibility to be present on the occasion and witness the ‘pran pratishtha’ of Lord Ram, he had said.
It remains to be seen if he goes ahead with the visit after the party’s decision to stay away from the event.
The Congress announced to stay away from the Ram Temple inauguration calling it a BJP-RSS event. The party accused the BJP of making the inauguration ceremony a political project for electoral gains ahead of Lok Sabha elections. The BJP has slammed the Congress for refusing to attend the ceremony and has accused the grand old party of minority appeasement.
