NEW DELHI: Several parts of Maharashtra witnessed incidents of violence amid the ongoing agitation seeking reservation for Marathas in government jobs and education.
While quota activist Manoj Jarange’s indefinite fast has entered the 7th day, incidents of violence were witnessed in many parts of the state in the last two days.
Beed district, which is also part of Marathwada, saw large-scale violence and arson by quota protesters who torched the homes of two Nationalist Congress Party (NCL) MLAs and a municipal council building during the agitation.

Maharashtra CM calls all-party meeting
Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde has called an all-party meeting on Wednesday morning to discuss the situation in the state. Shinde will apprise opposition leaders of the government’s plans to handle the situation and seek their support, said an official in the Chief Minister’s Office.
Strong action against those involved in violence: Fadnavis
Maharashtra deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said that the government is very positive about giving reservations to the Marathas. He condemned the violence that occurred in Maharashtra’s Beed on Monday and said that strict actions will be taken against those who are trying to spread violence.
Fadnavis announced that cases will be filed under Section 307 of the IPC (attempt to murder) against those who have indulged in violence and arson.
Fadnavis who is also the Home minister of the state stated that some people are taking advantage of the (Maratha reservation) agitation and indulging in violence.
Security beefed up at Maharashtra-Karnataka border
G Parameshwara, Karnataka’s home minister said that the security has been beefed up in the border areas of Maharashtra state in the backdrop of Maratha reservation crisis and unrest in the region.
He said that the platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) have been deployed wherever the situation is sensitive.
Parameshwara further stated that if the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) tries to hold ‘Black Day’ on the occasion of Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations in Belagavi, it will not be allowed, he stated.
Curfew, internet shut-down continue in Beed district
Curfew continued and Internet services remained suspended in central Maharashtra’s Beed district on Tuesday though there were no fresh incidents of violence on account of the Maratha quota agitation, a senior official said. Earlier, as many as 49 persons were arrested and curfew was imposed in parts of the district on Monday evening following incidents of violence and arson targeting the houses and offices of political leaders as the quota agitation intensified.
MSRTC bus operations supsended in five Marathwada districts
Services of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses have been stopped completely in five districts of Marathwada in central Maharashtra.
Bus services in Parbhani, Dharashiv, Latur, Jalna and Nanded districts have been suspended completely for the last three-four days while they have been hit to some extent in Beed, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Solapur districts, said the official of the state-owned corporation.
Resolve Maratha quota issue by holding special Parliament session: Uddhav
Uddhav Thackeray demanded the Centre to resolve the issue of Maratha reservation by calling a special session of Parliament, and said if the need arises, Union ministers from the state should resign in protest.
Thackeray demanded that the Maratha and Dhangar communities should also get reservation. Attacking chief minister Eknath Shinde, Thackeray asked what he was doing since the last one-and-a-half years and said the state government cannot shirk away from its responsibility.
Two Shiv Sena MPs resign
Two Shiv Sena MPs have resigned from their position amid the ongoing Maratha reservation row. Nashik MP Hemant Godse stepped down from the post, in support of the demand for reservation for the Maratha community.
Internet services have been suspended in Maharashtra’s Jalna district in view of violent incidents in the Marathwada region during the ongoing agitation seeking reservation for Marathas in the state.
‘Will not accept incomplete reservation’
Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange said that the Maratha community will not accept an “incomplete reservation” and the government should call a special session of the state legislature on the issue.
Jarange is on an indefinite hunger strike for the demand of reservation. “I have spoken to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde….I have made clear my stand once again that an incomplete reservation for the Marathas is not acceptable. The government should announce reservations for the Marathas in the entire state. We (Marathas across the state) are brothers and have a blood relation,” Jarange said.
