Manipur: Manipur administration’s outreach helped stop violence, says govt security advisor | India News

NEW DELHI: Local outreach by the Manipur administration to different communities through peace committees, community leaders as well as Church bodies — which have been relaying appeals to their people to maintain calm and helping to quell mischievous rumours — has been instrumental in arresting violent incidents in the state, Advisor (Security) to the Manipur government Kuldiep Singh told TOI on Sunday.
“The situation is much better today. No major incidents of violence were seen in the past 24 hours; only a few small clashes and instances of tension caused by rumours,” said Singh, who was brought in by the state government after violence broke out in parts of the state during a tribal solidarity march on Wednesday.
To take care of the element of mistrust and mischievous rumours, the Manipur administration, guided by the home ministry that is closely monitoring the situation through regular reviews chaired by home minister Amit Shah, has reached out to the district peace committees, community leaders and the Church bodies.
“They have been conveying our peace appeals to the people. Peace committees have been activated in all districts. While the police and security forces are doing the firefighting, a parallel dialogue is being undertaken with the community and Church leaders as an outreach to the people to maintain calm. This has been instrumental in normalising the situation,” Singh told TOI over the phone. The security adviser added that helplines had been activated to help people report their issues and hardships, and get guidance and assistance on how best to resolve them.
The former CRPF director general informed TOI that around 30 miscreants have been arrested so far for allegedly triggering various violent incidents in the state. As the firefighting declines due to the improving situation, focus will shift to investigation and identifying the triggers and people behind the violence, said Singh. When asked if the violence was organised, he said this angle too shall be part of the investigation.
With thousands of Central para-military personnel as well as displaced families having moved to camps of Central forces like CRPF and Assam Rifles for safety purposes, Singh said it is only a temporary arrangement as people will be moving back to their homes once the situation normalises. “They are being treated well in the camps. While some people have started returning to their homes, others too shall follow once they are confident of the situation having normalised,” he told TOI.
On the disparity between the official death figures and those put out by sections of the media, Singh stated: “We are quoting only those death figures that we have confirmed were directly related to violent incidents. Our figure (30) is lower than what some media is reporting (above 50) as we are verifying the cause of each death”.
