NEW DELHI: In a shocking incident late on Tuesday, at least six Assam Rifles personnel were injured after a soldier opened fire on them before taking his own life in Manipur’s Chandel district, according to police reports on Wednesday.
The violence erupted in the Sajik Tampak area, where the jawan, for reasons yet to be determined, turned his weapon on his fellow soldiers.Following the shooting spree, he fatally shot himself, confirmed a senior police officer.
In a statement addressing the incident, Manipur Police urged the public not to link this tragic event with the ongoing ethnic tensions in the region. “This unfortunate incident should not be correlated with the ongoing ethnic conflict, given the fact that none of the injured are from Manipur. An investigation into the incident has been ordered to ascertain the facts,” the police communicated on X.

The injured Assam Rifles personnel were swiftly transported to a medical facility where they are currently receiving treatment. Authorities have reported that all injured personnel are in stable condition.
