NEW DELHI: Los Angeles police released body camera footage capturing a recent incident in which officers shot and killed a 36-year-old man, identified as Jason Lee Maccani, who was holding a plastic fork. The incident occurred on February 3 in a downtown Los Angeles warehouse.
One of the involved officers is currently under investigation to determine compliance with rules on the use of deadly force.
The released footage reveals a confrontation between the man and approximately six police officers in the building’s corridor. The officers instructed the man to approach them with his arms raised, and initially, he appeared to comply. However, he continued to walk with clenched fists, holding an object that officers believed to be a screwdriver.
Despite attempts by the officers to subdue him, as stated in the police statement, the man persisted in his movements. The footage released captured the moment shots were fired as the man approached the police.
According to the police statement, “The suspect grabbed one of the officers and the Beanbag Shotgun she was holding, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting.”
The incident unfolded after an emergency call reported an “assault with a deadly weapon” by an individual in the warehouse. The caller described the person as being under the influence of drugs or alcohol and threatening others with a stick.
Maccani was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Fortunately, none of the warehouse employees or police officers involved in the incident sustained any injuries.
