NEW DELHI: After the tragic mass shooting in Lewiston on Wednesday, Governor of Maine, Janet Mills said, “This city did not deserve this terrible assault on its citizens, on its peace of mind, on its sense of security,” the governor said. “No city does — no state, no people.”
Joined by the state and local public safety officials for a press conference in Lewiston, the governor announced that at least 18 people were killed and another 13 were injured in Wednesday’s shooting in Lewiston, Maine
Authorities said the shooting started just before 7 pm at Schemengees Bar and Grille and Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley.
A vehicle believed to have been driven by Card was found overnight in Lisbon, about eight miles away from Lewiston, according to Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck. The shelter-in-place order has been extended to the town of Bowdoin and Lisbon while Lewiston and its twin city, Auburn, remained under lockdown Thursday.
Robert Card, the primary suspect in Wednesday’s mass shooting, is facing eight counts of murder, Maine State Police Col. William G. Ross said.
According to CNN, schools were canceled and residents in and around Lewiston were warned to stay inside and lock their doors by the authorities.
It is notable that while the Governor is addressing the press conference, the primary suspect Robert Card is still at large. A massive search is launched by the investigators.
According to media reports, Robert Card is a petroleum supply specialist in the Army Reserve, according to records provided by the Army on Thursday.
Earlier, President Joe Biden ordered flags be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday as “a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on October 25, 2023, in Lewiston, Maine,” according to a proclamation issued by the White House.
Biden said in an official proclamation that the move was “mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence” in the small town of Lewiston, the deadliest mass shooting this year in America.
