NEW DELHI: Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Wednesday arrested a 32-year-old engineer from Nashik city for “supporting and funding” Islamic State (Isis), reported news agency PTI citing a source.
According to the official, the engineer runs an import-export business in Nashik city, around 200km from Mumbai, and investigations have revealed he had transferred funds to the global terrorist group, also called Islamic State, three times.
Some associates of the accused are being probed across multiple states, the official said without providing further details.
Last month the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested eight terrorists linked to ISIS following raids across Maharashtra.
In November raids, the NIA spokesperson had said a huge amount of unaccounted cash, firearms, sharp weapons, incriminating documents that detailed possible targets, smartphones and other digital devices were seized.
The probe agencies have been carrying out raids across the country to disrupt and demolish the attempts of ISIS to carry out violent acts of terror in the country.
Prior to the November raids last year, the NIA had arrested more than 15 ISIS operatives after multiple searches in Maharashtra and Karnataka.
