Facing overwhelming pressure and public scrutiny, the award-winning artist Lizzo hinted at a possible departure from the music scene—or perhaps a retreat from social media platforms.
On Instagram (Mar. 29, 2024), the musician expressed her frustration with a succinct message that left fans questioning, “I didn’t sign up for this shit — I QUIT,” followed by a peace sign emoji. The specifics of her announcement remain unclear as her representatives have yet to clarify the intentions behind her statement.
Through an Instagram story and post, Lizzo candidly shared her exhaustion with the constant negative attention.“ All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it,” she said. “But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it.”
The “Truth Hurts” singer voiced her concern about fabricated narratives aimed toward garnering attention online at her expense, noting the mockery surrounding her body image and the dissection of her personal character by people unfamiliar with her true self.
According to reporting by The Hill, her expression of disillusionment followed her participation in a high-profile fundraising event for President Joe Biden‘s campaign in New York. The event starred other prominent figures like Ben Platt, Mindy Kaling, Queen Latifah, Cynthia Erivo, and Lea Michele.
During this tumultuous period, Lizzo faces legal challenges from a group of former performing dancers. Their lawyer has scrutinized Lizzo’s engagement in the fundraiser amidst ongoing lawsuits against the artist, involving serious accusations of sexual, religious, and racial harassment, among others.
While some of the initial charges, including claims of fat-shaming, have been dismissed by a judge, a scaled-down version of the lawsuit is still active. Last reported by Billboard on March 8, the proceedings are on hiatus, likely for numerous months, as Lizzo has appealed the recent judgment. The renowned performer has firmly denied all accusations levied against her.
