NEW DELHI: The government has decided to support 75 lakh rural women associated with self help groups and related livelihood generating activities under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM) to become “lakhpati didis” in the ongoing 2023-24 financial year by enabling them to earn at least Rs 1 lakh per annum. It has set a target of enabling two crore women to become “lakhpati didis” in the next three years.
Observing that around 10 crore women are already associated with SHGs, Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech had said, “When you go to a village, you will find ‘Bank-wali didi’, ‘Anganwadi didi’ and ‘Dawaiwali (medicine) didi’. It is my dream to make two crore lakhpati didis in our villages.”
The DAY-NRLM under the ministry of rural development organised a national conclave on Wednesday on the way forward to achieve this goal. Releasing the strategy document for this, rural development and panchayati raj minister Giriraj Singh asked his ministry officials to develop a rating mechanism and make an assessment by December on the performance of the states.
The Mission, in its endeavour to empower SHG women, works on making collectives of women, strengthening their federations, capacitating them with knowledge and skills for livelihood intervention, financing and credit support etc. for the livelihood augmentation of the SHG women.
According to NRLM data, so far 9.5 crore women have been mobilised into 87.4 lakh SHGs. Data show that nearly Rs 6.96 lakh crore of bank credit has been accessed by the SHGs since 2013-14. The NPA at 1.88% is a result of the efforts undertaken at various levels of the Mission.Govt to support 75L women in SHGs become ‘lakhpati didis’ in 2023-24
