It is often said that art transcends borders, same can said for films. And in today’s world, given how small the world has become, one big film in one part of the world, can affect another film from another part of the world.
And that’s exactly what has happened with Prabhas’ most anticipated film Kalki 2898 AD, which also stars Kamal Haasan, Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone. The film is slated to release on 9th May 2024. Rumours are doing the rounds is that the film will have an issue finding IMAX screens for itself as the makers of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes have entered into a contract with IMAX, blocking their screens from 9th May to 23rd May, thus showcasing only their film.
IMAX as a format has been gaining a lot of attention, just in the last one year, the format generated a box office collection of nearly US $ 1 billion across the globe. In India, the format contributed a sizable collection for films like Jawan, Pathaan and Salaar: Part 1- Ceasefire. And this year, the format is expected to program for many big ticket films like Dune: Part Two, Despicable Me 4, Joker: Folie à Deux, Deadpool 3, and Wicked.
Coming to Kalki, the agreement between IMAX and makers of Apes franchise means that except the home country, the film will most likely not be getting any IMAX screens, if it decides to come on 9th May. In India Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is expected to release only on May 24th. The format has 23 screens in India, whereas there are 1700 screens across the globe.
Kingdom of Planet of the Apes is directed by Wes Ball and features names like Owen Teague and Freya Allan.
