BENGALURU: Even as return-to-office mandates are met with resistance, TCS employees have a new struggle — not having enough seats, and confusion over assigned seats. In the last two years, TCS has added 1 lakh employees, taking the overall tally to over 6 lakh employees. This appears to be one reason for the space crunch.
The problem has been exacerbated by the company doing away with what they call occasional occupation zones (OOZs), dedicated plug and play facilities to provide temporary seating arrangements for employees.These were available across TCS offices. Now that employees are denied access to OOZs, some of them are working out of corridors and lobbies. That’s a huge discomfort, considering the long working hours, sources told TOI.
TCS is requesting employees to return to office on all five days of the week. Work from home has ended for some teams. Added to the confusion is employees being asked to come to the offices assigned to them and not to opt for offices that are closer to their homes. A source in TCS’s HR team said this is part of the company’s effort to streamline the return-to-office transition and make it smooth for all employees. “There was confusion as some offices were lean, while others had disproportionate resources,” the person said. An email sent to TCS did not elicit a response till the time of going to press.
Some employees told TOI that their team managers informed them that their city allowance would be deducted if they don’t work from the designated offices. TCS employees working from tier-1 locations get a city allowance ranging between Rs 2,000-3,000 a month. Some said they were willing to forgo the allowance for the sake of flexibility.
