NEW DELHI: In a spirited session in the Rajya Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday commended the service of former Prime Minister Manmohan while bidding farewell to retiring MPs.
“I want to remember Dr Manmohan Singh today, his contribution has been immense…For such a long time, the way he has guided this House & country. “I remember in the other House, during the voting, it was known that the treasury bench would win but Dr Manmohan Singh came on his wheelchair and cast his vote. This an example of a member being alert of his duties,” PM Modi said while highlighting the contributions of Manmohan Singh.
Next, PM Modi’s speech took a turn for the satirical as he addressed the Congress‘s release of a “black paper,” a document critiquing his government’s policies.
PM Modi humorously thanked leader of opposition Mallikarjun Kharge for Congress’s “black paper”, likening it to a “kaala teeka” — a traditional mark worn to ward off evil.
The Prime Minister also referred to black robes worn by opposition MPs in the House as a mark of protest and said, “We also saw a fashion parade in the Rajya Sabha when some members came in black clothes.”
He gave his best wishes to all retiring members expressed the hope that that new generations will benefit from their experience. Sixty-eight members of Rajya Sabha are retiring between February and May after completing their term.
Earlier in the day, the Congress, led by Kharge, released the “black paper” titled ‘10 Saal Anyay Kaal’, aiming to shed light on what they perceive as the Modi government’s failures, including issues like unemployment, inflation, farmers’ distress, and others. The document seeks to counter the government’s narrative by highlighting unresolved challenges facing the nation.
Kharge criticized Modi’s deflection to Congress leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi when confronted with contemporary issues like price rise, challenging the current administration to account for its promises and actions. The Congress president vowed to lead India out of what he described as the BJP’s “darkness of injustice” in 2024, drawing on the party’s historical legacy as the architect of India’s independence.
