Justin Trudeau: ‘Justin Trudeau under fire for not revealing full cost of Montana trip’

NEW DELHI: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing sharp criticism from opposition over lack of transparency regarding the disclosure of complete expenses incurred during his Easter weekend trip to Montana.
Opposition leader Matthew Green, who belongs to the New Democratic Party, emphasized that while the prime minister is entitled to security protection and vacations, Canadians deserve to know the exact costs associated with these trips.
Justin Trudeau’s Easter weekend retreat in Montana incurred costs of almost a quarter of a million dollars for Canadian taxpayers, significantly higher than the amount disclosed to Parliament, according to CBC News.
The total expenses for the April 6-10 trip exceeded $228,839 when accounting for the expenses covered by the Canadian Armed Forces, the Privy Council Office, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police(RCMP). This figure did not include the regular salaries of the RCMP officers responsible for the prime minister’s security, the Royal Canadian Air Force aircrew, or the Privy Council official accompanying the prime minister with necessary secure communication equipment.
The government’s initial response to a question from Conservative MP Luc Berthold reported a significantly lower figure of $23,846, excluding the $204,993 spent by the RCMP on overtime, accommodations, meals, incidentals, and travel associated with Trudeau’s holiday. This information only came to light in response to a CBC News inquiry.
Trudeau declared a “ground security motorcade” as a gift from the US Secret Service in his filings with the ethics commissioner’s office. However, the US Secret Service clarified that this was not considered a gift, as it was part of their mandated protection provided to heads of state while on US soil.
Despite repeated queries, Trudeau’s office declined to provide further details about the trip, including his accommodations, companions, and whether he paid for his stay in Montana, the CBS report said.
Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner raised a point of privilege in the House of Commons, arguing that the failure to include RCMP expenses in the government’s response to an MP’s question led MPs and the House of Commons astray. She highlighted the challenge of obtaining accurate information about the government.
Trudeau has faced previous controversies related to his vacations, including a trip to the Bahamas to visit the Aga Khan, which cost taxpayers $271,000 and led to findings by Canada’s ethics commissioner that he had breached government ethics rules.
