SRINAGAR: J&K lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha painted an optimistic picture of the region on the occasion of “UT Divas” on Tuesday, highlighting advancements in the economy, tourism, education, industry, healthcare, and infrastructure during the four years since the abrogation of Article 370 and division of the state into two Union territories.
The J&K administration celebrated its achievements and transformation at a function on Lal Chowk in Srinagar.Sinha claimed that J&K stands among the top states and Union territories in India in implementing central schemes.
The LG listed several achievements, including the successful hosting of the G20 tourism working group meeting and the substantial increase in the number of tourists visiting the region, which stood at 5.21 crore visitors since 2019.
He underscored the growth in the industrial sector with investment proposals worth Rs 66,000 crore and employment promises for more than 3 lakh people. An additional package of Rs 28,000 crore has been earmarked for industrial development. Education too has seen a surge as 51 new degree colleges have been sanctioned, of which 48 were established during the period.
Sinha noted the improved quality of life for J&K residents, with a reduction in disruptions like bandhs and hartals. He emphasised the focus on welfare, peace, infrastructure development, a green revolution, and inclusivity in the region. “J&K has been successful in engaging more than 60 lakh youth in different sports activities organised at the district, block, and UT levels in 2022–23, in comparison to just 1.20 lakh in 2018–19.”
However, opinions on the region’s development varied widely as several political parties expressed concerns over the alleged lack of progress since J&K’s “downgrade” to a Union territory.
Congress observed October 31 as a “black day” and criticised the BJP’s celebration of “UT Divas”. The party expressed disappointment over the failure to restore statehood and democratic processes.
PDP leader Waheed Para also criticised BJP for “downgrading” J&K and urged that statehood be restored, which he said would legitimise claims of development in the region. “BJP government has murdered democracy in J&K,” Para said.
National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah questioned the progress made after J&K’s “downgrade” and the absence of local officers in active postings. He raised concerns about the change and its impact on J&K. CPM state unit head Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, representing the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), described the celebrations as painful and unprecedented.
