NEW DELHI: In yet another success in the fight against Left-wing extremism in Jharkhand, CRPF along with Jharkhand police on Monday neutralised five Maoists, including two Bihar-Jharkhand special area committee (BJSAC) members carrying a reward of Rs 25 lakh each, and destroyed a Naxal camp in an intelligence-based operation in Chatra district.
During the search operation following the encounter — which was conducted by the joint team consisting of 203 CoBRA, 134 Bn CRPF and Chatra police based on an intelligence input about the movement of a notorious Maoist group in Grahe forest area under Lawalong police station area in Chatra — dead bodies of five Maoists along with automatic weapons were recovered. Modern weapons, ammunition and other essential items were also recovered from the camp of Maoists busted in the operation.
The five Maoists killed have been identified as Gautam Paswan, BJSAC member carrying a reward of Rs 25 lakh; Ajit Oraon @ Charlis, BJSAC member with a Rs 25 lakh reward; Amar Ganjhu, sub-zonal commander with a reward of Rs 5 lakh; Ajay Yadav @ Nandu, sub-zonal commander with a reward of Rs 5 lakh; and Sanjeet Bhuiyan, sub-zonal commander. CRPF sources said two AK-47 rifles, one INSAS rifle, two other rifles, hundreds of ammunition and other items of daily use were among the recoveries.
A CRPF officer told TOI that the search team was moving in the said forest area when the Maoists opened heavy fire on them. The security force personnel retaliated with marching firepower. As the security forces succeeded in pinning the Maoist group down, some of the cadres managed to flee. After the encounter, the area was cordoned and a thorough search operation carried out.
During the search operation, dead bodies of five Maoists along with automatic weapons, were recovered.
This significant success in the bordering area, said a CRPF officer, has broken the back of Maoists. Gautam Paswan’s team was known to be a strong Maoist group that was consistently causing damage to the security forces and the local populace.
The latest counter-Naxal operation comes at the back of an all-round offensive by CRPF and Jharkhand police against Left-wing extremism in the state. Earlier, joint operations of security forces in Budha Pahar, an area on the Jharkhand-Chhattisgarh border and the Chaibasa-Saraikela-Khunti tri-junction, had succeeded in freeing these two hotspots of Maoists.
“Consistent and strategic operations are being carried out by CRPF and Jharkhand police in the state against CPI (Maoist) cadres. Naxal operations aimed at apprehending the top leadership of CPI (Maoist) cadres are proving to be immensely successful,” said a senior CRPF officer.
