NAGPUR: Afsar Pasha, a jailed operative of the banned terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has been identified by police as the mastermind behind two threatening calls for extortion made to Union minister Nitin Gadkari’s office in Nagpur, while his accomplice and co-accused Jayesh Kantha, alias Jayesh Pujari, executed the plan.
A police team has been dispatched to Karnataka to bring Pasha from Belagavi jail to Nagpur for questioning. Pujari had cell phones and SIM cards in his possession in the jail. Similar searches will be conducted in Pasha’s cell once the necessary formalities are done.
Pujari, who made the calls to Gadkari’s office on January 14 and March 21 for extortion purposes, was brought to Nagpur at the end of March. Currently held in Nagpur central jail, Pujari faces charges under the stringent UAPA in two cases registered against him.
Nagpur police found during their probe Pasha’s involvement in the calls. According to sources, a disagreement arose between Pasha and Pujari over the ransom amount demanded from Gadkari’s office. Pasha wanted Pujari to make higher demands. Sources said Pasha, who’s accused of coordinating terrorist attacks in Dhaka in 2003 and Bengaluru in 2008, influenced Pujari to join his mission while they were both in jail.
