Patel, entrusted with overseeing the Jaguars’ monthly financial statements and department budgets, abused his authority over the virtual credit card (VCC) program. This allowed certain authorized employees to request VCCs for legitimate business expenses. Instead, Patel allegedly engaged in wire fraud, manipulating the system by duplicating reoccurring transactions, inflating legitimate amounts, and entering fictitious transactions.
The ill-gotten gains financed a spree of extravagant purchases, including a condominium in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, a Tesla Model 3 sedan, a Nissan pickup truck, and a luxury watch valued at over $95,000. Patel also allegedly used the stolen funds for online gambling, purchasing cryptocurrency, chartering private jets, booking luxury hotels, and various other personal expenses.
The Jaguars, referred to as “Business A” in the federal filing, confirmed the victimization in a statement. The team acknowledged Patel’s termination in February 2023 and expressed gratitude for the efforts of the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for their investigation.
Patel faces charges of wire fraud and illegal monetary transactions. If convicted, he may be required to forfeit over $22 million in addition to assets acquired through the fraudulent activities. In a recent development, Patel’s attorney filed a waiver of indictment, indicating his willingness to proceed with the case through an information process rather than an indictment.
