I’ve been victim of insults for 20 years: PM Modi while expressing anguish over Dhankhar’s mimicry | India News

NEW DELHI: A day after Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee mimicked Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar in front of Parliament during the protests against suspension of many members, PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday spoke to the Rajya Sabha chairman expressing great pain over the “abject theatrics” by the opposition MP.
The PM said he had been at the receiving end of such insults for the past 20 years but it was unfortunate that it has happened to the country’s Vice-President that too in front of Parliament.
Dhankhar said that he assured the PM that the antics of a few won’t prevent him from performing his duty and upholding the principles enshrined in the Constitution. “I am committed to those values from the bottom of my heart. None of the insults will make me change my path,” Dhankhar said in a post on X. As Dhankhar shared the details of his conversation with the PM, several other senior leaders also expressed regret and anguish over the incident.
Defence minister Rajnath Singh said the shameful manner in which the Rajya Sabha chairman has been insulted by the TMC MP and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is a “black stain” on India’s democratic traditions. “The tradition of respecting persons holding the highest constitutional positions is the lifeline of democracy. But the low level at which parliamentary dignity is being devalued by the Opposition is a matter of concern for the entire political class,” the defence minister said.
Speaking in Basti district in UP, BJP president J P Nadda said, “The public sends MPs to Parliament so that they can engage in discussions and debate, but they have turned into jokers.” He also criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for recording the act on his phone and working like a “cameraman”. Taking a strong exception to Banerjee’s act, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)’s Harsimrat Kaur Badal, a non-NDA party condemned the act of Trinamool Congress MP, saying “I strongly condemn this. You might not personally like people who are sitting with you but you need to respect the position and the post.”
