Cocaine Bear has everyone talking this weekend!

The horror-comedy brought in an impressive $23 million from 3,534 North American theaters in its opening weekend, Variety reported on Sunday (February 26) – surpassing the box office expectations.

Inspired by the 1985 true story of a drug runner’s plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it, Cocaine Bear finds an oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converging in a Georgia forest where a 500-pound apex predator has ingested a staggering amount of cocaine and gone on a coke-fueled rampage for more blow … and blood.

The movie currently commands a 71% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 75% audience score.

“The pleasure’s in the crass, goopy excitement of it. It’s kind of a put-on, but the movie gets by on being surprisingly blood-soaked where it counts,” Rolling Stone said in their review.

“It may not be Grizzly Man meets Scarface, but it leaves Snakes on a Plane standing on the runway,” noted The Observer.

“In an atmosphere in which it is all too easy to feel suffocated by climate anxiety, Elizabeth Banks’ film cuts through our ecological malaise,” concluded Slate.
