Indian Railways looks to become ‘atmanirbhar’ in forged wheels manufacturing; details here

The Indian Railways needs 80,000 forged wheels annually to meet its requirement and the national transporter has already approved a project for manufacturing 2,30,000 wheels, according to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This comes after the minister’s statement in Parliament, where he highlighted that India currently imports a significant portion of its annual requirement of 4,40,000 train wheels.
During a press conference, Vaishnaw clarified that the government has initiated a new project to manufacture forged wheels and also export them. According to a PTI report, Vaishnaw also explained that the requirement is for 80,000 wheels. Through this project, we will be able to produce 2,30,000 forged wheels. We will utilize 80,000 wheels domestically, and the remaining will be exported, he said.
In his earlier statement to the Lok Sabha on December 6, the minister stated that the annual average requirement of wheels for Indian Railways, including manufacturing and maintenance of wagons, coaches, and locomotives, is approximately 4,40,000. He also mentioned that the Rail Wheel Factory/Bangalore, Rail Wheel Plant/Bela, SAIL/Durgapur Steel Plant, and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL)/Rae Bareli supply the wheels required by the Indian Railways. However, any shortfall is met through imports, as per the existing policy guidelines of the Government of India. The minister’s response was to a query by Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MP G Ranjith Reddy, who asked about the inability of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) to supply wheels to the Railways, leading to the decision to import wheels from China.
Vaishnaw emphasized that the ministry has taken measures to enhance indigenous capacity for wheels in line with the requirements of the Indian Railways. A contract for the supply of 80,000 forged wheels annually has been awarded as part of a long-term agreement since June 2023. This initiative aims to establish a forged wheels plant in India under the ‘Make in India‘ campaign, he said. With these measures, India is progressing towards self-reliance in forged wheels, the minister added.

Furthermore, Vaishnaw highlighted that Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) has set up a forged wheels plant in Raebareli under an off-take agreement with the railways to supply 80,000 forged wheels annually. This plant has been commissioned in September 2021.
