India up 6 places on World Banks’s logistics index

NEW DELHI: India has moved up six places on the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index to be ranked 38th, with the data showing considerable reduction in the dwell time at ports.
Compared to 2018, India’s gain is on account of better infrastructure, international shipments and track and trace with a deterioration seen in timeliness. Customs performance is seen to be around the same levels.
One of the biggest improvements is seen in case of the dwell time at ports, which was estimated at 2. 6 days, compared to three for topranked Singapore. It is 4 for the United Arab Emirates and South Africa, 7 for the United States and 10 for Ger-many. “One explanation could be that the period for these estimates coincides with the tail end of an unprecedented supply chain crisis. Not only did ships have to wait before being serviced, but containers had to wait for trucks to be removed. Furthermore, sanctions against Russia (in response to its invasion of Ukraine), which disconnected it from most container shipping services, explain the high container dwell time in some countries around the Baltic Sea, such as Finland,” the report said.
Another possible explanation is the investment by emerging economies such as India, which has come in for special attention.
“Since 2015, the government of India has invested in trade-related soft and hard in-frastructure connecting port gateways on both coasts to the economic poles in the hinterland. Technology has been a critical component of this effort, with implementationunder a public-private partnership of a supply chain visibility platform, which contributed to remarkable reductions of delays,” the latest report said.
It pointed to how the radio frequency identification tags had been deployed on containers for end-to-end tracking. “With the introduction of cargo tracking, dwell time in the eastern port of Visakhapatnam fell from 32. 4 days in 2015 to 5. 3 days in 2019,” it said.
The government cheered the development. “An encouraging trend, powered by our reforms and focus on improving logistics infrastructure. These gains will reduce costs and make our businesses more competitive,” PM Nanredra Modi said in a tweet responding to commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal. Hesaid that that India had moved up 54 places since 2014.
“The sustained ascendancy of India’s position in the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index since 2014 has been clear reflection of the policy initiatives taken by the government. . . Our efforts to modernise and apply IT solutions to solve issues has resulted in record performance in many of our ports. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi ji, the government is working towards eliminating frictions among various modes of logistics and enable amulti modal transportation system which is equipped and enabled by modern infrastructure and technology, resulting in optimisation of cost and boost economic efficiency,” shipping minister Sarbananda Sonowal said.
