TARN TARAN/AMRITSAR : Despite ongoing cross-border hostilities and instances of drone intrusions, drug and ammunition smuggling from Pakistan, the border guarding forces of India and Pakistan continue to uphold traditional rituals to commemorate religious and national occasions of both countries and religions.
On the occasion of the festival of Eid, the Border Security Force (BSF) and Pakistan Rangers exchanged sweets and warm greetings, expressing hopes for a prosperous future for both nations at the Attari international border on Thursday.
Meanwhile, on the same day, the BSF also recovered approximately 5 kg of heroin which was airdropped by a rogue Pakistani drone in the fields near Khalra village in Tarn Taran district.
The formalities involving the exchange of sweets and pleasantries between the BSF and Pakistan Rangers on the occasion religious and national days underscores the contrasting realities at the international border.
While the BSF strives to maintain cordial relations, they also face the challenge of combatting illicit activities such as drug, arms, and ammunition trafficking.
In contrast, there have been allegations that the Pakistan Rangers continue to support smugglers in pushing contraband into Indian territory.
A senior BSF official who didn’t wish to give his name said “This display of adherence to customs and ceremonies highlights the resilience and commitment of these forces to maintain cordiality and respect cultural diversity, even in the face of challenges” adding that “It serves as a reminder that shared traditions can transcend conflicts and foster a sense of unity among individuals serving on the border, promoting mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence”
Both countries exchange sweets on the occasions including Diwali, Eid, Independence Day’s, India’s Republic day , Holi at the three internatioal borders in Punjab namely Attari, Sadqi and Hussaniwala.
The show of camaraderie largely depends on the diplomatic mood of the governments of both countries and comes to halt during the period of bitter relations , skirmishes at the international border with Pakistan and LoC .
In 2015 there was no exchange of sweets and pleasantries on occasion of Eid festival after Pak Rangers didn’t turn up to exchange greetings on the occasion of Eid ul Zuha in October 2014. However, following diplomatic efforts there was a thaw in strained relations with Pakistan following which the border guarding forces again resumed the tradition and as a result the sweets were exchanged between two forces on Independence Day and Holi festival in 2016. In the same year, BSF had refused to exchange sweets with Pak Ranger’s on Diwali after Indian army’s surgical strike in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir .
