AHMEDABAD: Airfares to Ahmedabad have surged dramatically, reaching as high as 350% from major cities, because of the highly anticipated India-Pakistan World Cup Cricket match at the Motera stadium in the city on October 15. Cricket fans, VVIPs, and sponsors have already begun making their hotel and travel bookings for the match.
A round trip from Chennai to Ahmedabad now costs an astonishing Rs 45,425 per person for non-stop flights, even when booked three months in advance on July 15. In normal circumstances, this would typically cost around Rs 10,000 for a round trip, according to travel industry sources.
The ICC Cricket World Cup is scheduled to be held in India from October 5 to November 19. The opening match, final, and the contest between India and Pakistan will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
With the expectation of high demand on match days, airfares to Ahmedabad from major cities have skyrocketed for October 14-16, even when booked well in advance. Even nearby destinations such as Mumbai and Delhi have witnessed fare increases of 339% and 203% respectively for these dates.
Virendra Shah, chairman of the Travel Agents’ Association of India (TAAI), highlighted the surge in inbound airfares to Ahmedabad due to the high demand during match days. “While the opening and final match days haven’t generated significant traction, there is immense excitement surrounding the India-Pakistan match. Overall, there is a high volume of enquiries for hotel bookings and tickets for the match in Ahmedabad,” he said.
Peak-hour flights from major cities are even more expensive, adding to the cost burden. Hotels in Ahmedabad are already experiencing high occupancy levels for the match days. A city-based hotelier reported that major five-star hotels have already sold out over 60% of their inventories for the match days. “Enquiries continue to pour in from cricket fan groups, VVIPs, corporates, teams, and sponsors,” said a city-based hotelier.
