NEW DELHI: India, Maldives discussed the ongoing deployment of technical personnel and bilateral cooperation in the third meeting of the India-Maldives high-level Core Group on Sunday, the ministry of external affairs said in a statement.
The discussion focused on providing humanitarian aid to the Maldives’ people through Indian aviation. “During the meeting, both sides reviewed the ongoing deputation of Indian technical personnel to enable continued operation of Indian aviation platforms that provide humanitarian and medvac services to the people of Maldives, the MEA said in the statement.
The two nations also discussed strengthening bilateral ties by boosting bilateral trade and investment and development cooperation projects. “Both sides continued their discussions on wide ranging issues related to bilateral cooperation. This inter alia, included expediting the implementation of ongoing development cooperation projects through regular convening of joint monitoring mechanisms, efforts to boost bilateral trade & investment and enhancing people-to-people linkages through capacity building and travel,” as per the statement.
In the meeting it was also decided that that the next meeting of the high level core group would be in New Delhi after deciding upon a “mutually convenient date”.
Meanwhile, the first and the second core group meeting in January and February also focused on finding a mutually workable solution to enable continued operation of the Indian military platforms in the island nation.
Last month, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu said, “there will be no Indian troops in the country come May 10. Not in uniform and not in civilian clothing. The Indian military will not be residing in this country in any form of clothing after the opposition started criticising the Muizzu government asserting that the Indian personnel sent to Maldives as civilians are in reality military officials out of uniform. I state this with confidence.”
However, both India and the Maldives reached an agreement on viable solutions to ensure the ongoing operation of Indian aviation platforms providing essential services like humanitarian aid and medical evacuations to the Maldivian people.
The core group was set up by the two groups following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu on the sidelines of the COP28 summit in Dubai in December.
The ties between India and Maldives have been strained since January when three ministers from the Muizzu government made derogatory remarks against PM Narendra Modi after his Lakshadweep tweet. The ministers were suspended by the Maldives government following an intense backlash over their remarks. However, the controversy triggered a massive Boycott Maldives campaign in India.
