Imran Khan’s Supporters Clash with Police over Pakistan Polls Rigging Allegations | World News

NEW DELHI: A scuffle broke out between the supporters of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan and police in several cities across Pakistan. The supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party formed by Imran Khan, have been protesting against the alleged rigging of polls in the February 8 national elections.
The supporters gathered outside the Lahore Press Club and the party’s Jail Road office on Saturday to register their protest, Pakistan daily Dawn reported on Sunday.
The protesters raised slogans, demanding the restoration of their “stolen mandate” and sought rectification of results based on the vote count as per Form 45, prepared at polling stations under the watch of political parties’ polling agents.
During the protest, the police arrested Imran Khan-backed candidate Salam Akram Raja and took him to Racecourse Police Station before eventually releasing him. The cops arrested another PTI-backed candidate Ali Ijaz Buttar along with elderly men, women and a child.
Video clips circulating on social media showed policemen dragging the lawyer as he participated in the protest outside PTI’s office on Jail Road.
In many cities of Punjab, police arrived at the protest site even before the demonstrators had gathered and arrested several party leaders, candidates, workers and supporters. PTI workers and supporters, who had gathered on the call of party founder Imran Khan, the Dawn report said.
In Karachi, hundreds of PTI workers and supporters gathered outside the Election Commission of Pakistan’s Sindh office in the city’s Saddar area.
The protesters chanted slogans against the alleged rigging and demanded the judiciary and state institutions to intervene and fix the “flaws” in the results.
Jailed Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has announced its decision to sit in the oppositionin Parliament and launch a countrywide protest against alleged rigging in the elections. The major political parties in Pakistan have been trying to form a federal government following the split verdict in the February 8 elections.
While PTI-backed independent candidates performed well in the election, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) claimed to have enough numbers to form the government as some independents joined PML-N party post-polls.
PTI leader Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif said on Friday that the party will sit in the oppositionboth at the Centre and in the key province of Punjab, following the instructions of Imran Khan.
The decision came after the party named Umar Ayub Khan as its candidate for the prime minister and Aslam Iqbal as chief minister for Punjab.
Imran Khan’s party on Friday also issued a white paper against alleged rigging and announced its plan to kick off its demonstrations from Saturday (February 17).
