NEW DELHI: Imran Khan, former Pakistan president, is unhappy with President Arif Alvi for not using his presidential powers to ensure that general elections were held within 90 days of the dissolution of the National Assembly.
Speaking to reporters after a hearing of the Jinnah House attack, Imran Khan’s sister Aleema said that her brother was upset that the President only announced a cut-off and not a specific date for the polls, Geo News reported.
Pakistan President Arif Alvi had last month written a letter to the Election Commission of Paksitan suggesting a cut-off date for holding the elections.
According to GeoNews, the president had said that in the light of Article 48(5) of the Constitution, he has the authority and mandate “to appoint a date not later than 90 days from the date of dissolution [of assemblies], for holding of a general election to the assembly”.
[…] in terms of Article 48(5) the general election to the National Assembly should be held by the eighty-ninth day of the date of dissolution of the National Assembly, i.e. Monday 6th Day of November 2023,” his letter stated.
Imran, who is the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, is in jail and faces around 180 cases. President Alvi was one of the founding members of PTI.
The National Assembly was dissolved on August 9 and constitutionally, general elections should be held within 90 days but the process was delayed by the top election body due to the delimitation exercise which became mandatory in the wake of the new census held this year.
Aleema also said the PTI chief believed that a plot was being hatched to keep him in prison in the cipher case (leakage of a secret diplomatic cable) for a longer period.
She said a petition has also been filed to provide walking space and gym equipment to the cricketer-turned-politician in the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi.
