Have two ministers put AAP’s national ambitions under arrest? | India News

[ad_1]

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s trusted lieutenants Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain, both behind bars in separate cases, resigned from the Cabinet on Tuesday.

Two arrests

Jain, who used to be Delhi’s health and home minister, was already in jail since May 2022, after he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case. Sisodia was given all his portfolios.
Sisodia was arrested on Sunday for alleged corruption in connection with the drafting and implementation of the Delhi excise policy 2021-22 and sent to five-days custody of the probe agency on Monday.
On the day of his arrest, Sisodia was holding 18 out of the 33 total portfolios in Delhi government.

What happens now?

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court refused to entertain Sisodia’s plea seeking bail and asked him to move the high court, following which the news about resignations of the two key ministers surfaced.
AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj said two new ministers will be inducted in the cabinet.
But, news agency PTI reported, Sisodia’s portfolios would be allotted to Revenue Minister Kailash Gahlot and Social Welfare Minister Raj Kumar Anand.

How does it affect AAP?

At the centre of AAP’s national expansion strategy is the ‘Delhi model’. Kejriwal, Sisodia and Jain are the three faces behind this governance model. With Sisodia’s and Jain’s resignations, things can get difficult for Kejriwal if he has to take more burden of Delhi’s governance matters on his shoulders. Sisodia’s heavy-lifting in the Delhi government allowed Kejriwal to focus on AAP’s expansion beyond Delhi and Punjab.
Kejriwal already has scheduled visits lined up for Rajasthan, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh for political campaigning in the coming weeks. All these states go to polls later this year and are crucial to AAP’s expansion plan ahead of the 2024 general election. The current circumstances can force Kejriwal into tweaking and even cancel his campaign-related commitments in these states, party insiders said.
