Govt authorities to pay Rs 30 lakh compensation to families of those who die while cleaning sewers: SC | India News

NEW DELHI: In response to the alarming rate of sewer-related fatalities across the nation, the Supreme Court on Friday, directed the government authorities to provide compensation of Rs 30 lakh to the families of those who lose their lives while engaged in sewer cleaning.
A bench comprising Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Aravind Kumar also ruled that people who suffer permanent disabilities while cleaning sewers will be paid Rs 20 lakh as minimum compensation.
“The Union and the state governments must ensure that manual scavenging is completely eradicated,” the bench said.
Justice Bhat, while delivering the judgment, emphasized that authorities should disburse compensation of up to Rs 10 lakh in cases where cleaners incur other types of disabilities.
In addition to these directives, the bench issued a range of instructions, though the specific details were not disclosed. Furthermore, the court instructed that government agencies must collaborate diligently to prevent such tragic incidents and that the high courts are fully empowered to oversee cases related to sewer-related fatalities.
The judgement came on a PIL. The detailed order is awaited.
As many as 347 people died while cleaning sewers and septic tanks in India in the last five years with Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Delhi accounting for 40 per cent of these deaths, according to government data cited in Lok Sabha in July 2022.
Taking a grim view of incidents of sewer deaths in the country, the Supreme Court on Friday said government authorities will have to pay Rs 30 lakh as compensation to the kin of those who die while cleaning sewers.
