NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday ordered Twitter as well as other social media platforms to remove the video of two women being paraded naked in Manipur.
“It is imperative for social media platforms to adhere to Indian laws as the matter is currently under investigation,” government sources said.
The video, which surfaced online on Wednesday, shows two women from one of the warring communities being paraded naked by a few men from the other side.
The widely circulated video also shows men constantly molesting the two women.
According to Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum, that incident happened in Kangpokpi district on May 4.

Union women and child development minister Smriti Irani, who termed the incident ‘condemnable and downright inhuman’, said that Manipur CM N Biren Singh has assured of strict action. “The Manipur CM has informed me that investigation is currently under way & assured that no effort will be spared to bring perpetrators to justice,” she said.

Earlier today, Congress general secretary slammed the Modi government and asked when will the Narendra Modi government stop acting like ‘all is well’.

Condemning the incident, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “PM’s silence and inaction has led Manipur into anarchy. INDIA will not stay silent while the idea of India is being attacked in Manipur. We stand with the people of Manipur. Peace is the only way forward.”

Manipur has been witnessing ethnic clashes since May 3 between the Meiteis, concentrated in Imphal valley, and the Kukis, occupying the hills.
