NEW DELHI: In a boost to the government’s Make in India plans, HP and Google have joined hands to manufacture budget Chromebook in India with which they plan to target affordable notebook segment for students and educational institutions, and government procurement.
The Chromebook devices, which are likely to be retailed at around Rs 20,000 and even lower in case of bulk deals, will be manufactured at the Flex facility near Chennai, where HP has been producing a range of laptops and desktops since August 2020. The production will begin from October 2 and will cater to demand for affordable PCs, mainly from education sector. This is the first time that Google Chromebooks will be manufactured in India.
“HP is committed to advancing digital equity, and we have been driving many initiatives to enable digital education across India. Manufacturing Chromebook laptops in India will allow Indian students to get easy access to affordable PCs. By further expanding our manufacturing operations, we continue to support the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the government,” Vickram Bedi, senior director (personal systems) at HP India, said.
Google looks to get deeper into Indian education system with budget notebooks. “At Google, we’ve been working closely with the local education ecosystem, supporting them in their transition to digital-first learning experiences through our products and teacher programmes. The local production of Chromebooks with HP marks an important step in our efforts to continue supporting the digital transformation of education in India,” said Bani Dhawan, head of education (South Asia) at Google.
“We hope this collaboration will help accelerate adoption of technology in more schools so every student and educator has access to the tools and skills to pursue their personal potential.”
