Hollywood’s biggest party, the Golden Globe Awards are finally here! Known for its spirited celebration of both film and television, the event has long been one of the highest-profile awards show, second only to the Oscars. The awards show, characterized by irreverent hosting, focuses on the glitziest filmmaking categories. Its distinctiveness lay in avoiding lengthy speeches from lesser-known technical categories.Marking the commencement of Hollywood’s annual awards season, culminating in the Oscars on March 10, the Globes promise to reunite top stars after a six-month hiatus due to strikes by actors and writers in 2023. In 2022, stars and studios boycotted the Globes, leading NBC to opt out of airing the event. However, the awards show made a comeback last January under a one-year probationary agreement with NBC after implementing reforms, including adding journalists of colour to its ranks and addressing ethical concerns. Comedian Jo Koy, known for his Netflix specials and starring role in “Easter Sunday,” is set to host the Globes. He will have a dazzling array of presenters, featuring Hollywood stars such as Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Affleck, and Dua Lipa, among others. The red carpet affair and champagne-fueled awards ceremony will honour the best in film and television, as chosen by a new group of 300 entertainment journalists worldwide. Leading the nominations this year is “Barbie,” closely followed by “Oppenheimer.” A unique feature of the Globes is the division of top film winners into two categories, with Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” leading the charge. This allows the show to capitalize on the Barbenheimer craze that has revitalized theatres.Nominees for Best Motion Picture Drama include “Oppenheimer,” Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” Celine Song’s “Past Lives,” Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest.” In the Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category, “Barbie” shares the spotlight with Ben Affleck’s “Air,” Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction,” Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,” Todd Haynes’ “May December,” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.”Acting nominees include Robbie and “Barbie” co-star Ryan Gosling, as well as “Oppenheimer” stars Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro, who starred in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” are also in the running for trophies. In the television arena, “Succession” is anticipated to sweep accolades for its final season depicting the high-stakes battle for control of a global media empire, leading all nominees with nine nods. The restaurant dramedy “The Bear” closely follows with five nominations. This year, there are 27 first-time nominees, promising an exciting mix of fresh talent and established stars. The ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS and simultaneously streamed on Paramount+ and Lionsgate Play in India.Read Less
