German Finance Minister: German finance minister Lindner vows course of austerity: Report

FRANKFURT: Germany’s finance minister Christian Lindner has vowed the country’s ruling coalition will follow a strict course of austerity after a budgetary crisis caused by a court ruling last week, according to an interview with German newspaper Handelsblatt on Thursday.
“We are talking about a significant additional need for consolidation,” said Lindner, the leader of Germany’s Free Democratic Party.
“We are talking about double-digit billions, for example to implement ambitious plans to renew infrastructure and invest in technology,” he said.
Budgets for 2024 and 2025 must be considered together and “structural changes are inevitable”, Lindner said in the interview.
The finance minister did not want to comment on whether the federal government would declare an emergency again in 2024. “At the moment I’m only concerned with 2023,” he said.
