Gerard Butler actually almost burnt his face off!

While promoting his new movie, Plane, the 53-year-old stopped by Late Night with Seth Meyers and recalled how he unintentionally covered his face in a substance that wanted to make him scratch his face off because it was burning so much.

Keep reading inside to find out what happened to Gerard Butler on the set of Plane…

He explained to Seth that the incident happened while preparing for one scene, where his character is working on the landing gear on the aircraft.

“I’m sticking my hand in between these two wheels, kind of pretending that I know what I’m doing,” Gerard started to say. “Every time I bring my hands out, they’re covered in blood and green fluid, right? And I’m like, ‘I don’t know what this green fluid is.’”

The green fluid ended up being a synthetic type of hydraulic fluid, which is actually used on plane landing gear. The fluid, which can be dyed green, purple or amber, according to the Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology, is “derived from an alcohol and phosphoric acid.”

The fluid, Gerard adds, was “essentially phosphoric acid” and he explained that as he went to get the sweat off his face, it went into his skin.

“Suddenly, it’s in my throat,” he says. “It’s in my mouth. It’s up my nose. It’s in my eyes. It’s burning my face, and I mean burning.”

While the sensation did eventually subside, Gerard recalled real pilots who were on the set yelling at him, going “‘No!’”
